Seven Story Conway Center Project Under Construction For 4414 Benning Road, NE

Here’s another announcement of a new project on Benning Road, NE. It’s been a busy November of activity announced on what’s becoming a hot new development corridor.

Construction is underway on the Conway Center project

Formal groundbreaking was back in the Summer and construction is underway on the Conway Center project across from Benning Road METRO. This is an over 320,000 sq. ft. facility which includes 110 apartments, a 92 unit rooming house, a medical and dental health center, a trade school for 140 students, general offices and associated parking garage. The site is owned and operated by SOME, Inc. (So Others Might Eat), a major local non-profit assisting the homeless in Washington, D.C. Some of their goals for the new project are:

“The facility will be the first in the District to combine affordable housing, job training and health care in a single location. Doing so will enable individuals and families to simultaneously address core challenges that they face: lack of affordable housing, unemployment and inadequate health care.”

“At Benning Road, families and individuals will access the integrated services that they need to achieve lasting independence. Safe, affordable housing will provide stability and a platform for the facility’s other services, job training and health care. SOME CET will train 300 students per year to qualify for, obtain and keep good jobs that reward work with a living wage and benefits. The Unity Medical and Dental Health Center will serve a total of 10,000 patients per year.”

SOME is working off of funding provided by an over $5 million grant by a local investment group, and are being helped along by $26 million in tax exempt mortgage bonds issued by the DCHFA (District of Columbia Housing Finance Agency).

“SOME has picked up a huge amount of local support for their objectives,” commented Gerard DiRuggiero. “Getting the DCHFA behind this cause is a huge deal. DCHFA alone has funded over $100 million in $0 Down mortgage loans to buyers directly in the last 2 years. With the DCHFA now putting up $26 million to help the homeless, they are becoming a city agency that is a model of social investment. Any US city should watch the good work and example the DCHFA is putting forth.”
