With so many real estate agents working in DC, how is a buyer to decide which agent is best to represent them?

I am a firm believer that word of mouth will build your business more than any other form of marketing.  When I am looking to find a new drycleaner, hair dresser, doctor, vet, pet sitter or any other business that I intend to use on an ongoing basis, the first thing I do is ask my friends and/or co-workers for a referral.  Why should real estate be any different?
