Shaw is a very large D.C. district that has undergone a lot of change and re-definition over the years. It is roughly bounded by M Street, NW or Massachusetts Avenue NW to the south; New Jersey Avenue, NW to the east; Florida Avenue, NW to the north; and 11th Street, NW to the west. Shaw includes the popular U Street Corridor, the commercial hub of the Shaw area, which extends westward ending at 16th Street NW.
Across the northern boundary formed by Florida Avenue is Columbia Heights and LeDroit Park. Most of this part of Shaw is comprised of gridded streets lined with small Victorian rowhouses dating back to the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. It is dominated by Howard University and the shops and theatres along U Street and centered along 7th Street NW.
Some define Shaw as also including Logan Circle, Truxton Circle, and other neighborhoods east of 16th Street and north of Downtown Washington, D.C. In recent years these areas of Shaw have all developed their own unique, stand-alone identities as D.C. neighborhoods.
